This is my forecast snow accumulation map for Wednesday night in Starkville. A low pressure will develop in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Texas Tuesday and move east/northeast through Wednesday. As precipitation spreads, temperatures at the surface and aloft will be very cold supporting snowfall. Quantitative precipitation amounts show Starkville receiving 0.2 to 0.3 inches of "water", which when frozen accumulates to 2 to 3 inches of snow. Higher amounts of precipitation will fall to the northwest in the delta of Mississippi where they could see as much as 6 inches of snow. Rain will likely fall for the majority of the storm farther south in the southeastern parts of the state (Meridian, Hattiesburg). However, as much colder air moves in behind the storm, these areas may see the rain end as a quick burst of snow. Expect snow to begin in Starkville late Wednesday night around midnight, continuing through Thursday morning before ending mid morning Thursday. Temperatures will be just below freezing as precipitation starts, falling into the middle 20s overnight.
Keep in mind this storm is still 4 to 5 days away so snowfall totals may change. I have confidence that snow will fall given the extremely cold temperatures forecasted for the end of the upcoming week. I will keep this updated as the storm develops.
